Hair is a modified epidermis found on the entire body except for the palms of hands, soles of feet and a few other small areas.
The function of the hair is to protect the body and works as a stimuli for the body.
The hair is made up of different parts including the shaft, root, follicle and arrector pili muscle. Shaft - the visible portion of the hair extending above the skin surface. Root - a portion of the hair deep to the shaft penetrating the dermis within a hair follicle. Hair Follicle - a mass of epidermis that extends down into the dermis and forms a small tube. Arrector Pili Muscle - a smooth involuntary muscle that makes the hair stand up straight. It runs from the dermis to the side of the hair follicle.
